Windows 10 has reached End of Life

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Your PC no longer receives security updates — but you can give it a new life with Linux instead of throwing it away.

What does End of Life mean?

Windows 10 reached End of Life (EOL) on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer publishes security updates. This means your PC becomes increasingly vulnerable to hacker attacks, viruses and malware with each passing day.

Without security updates, your PC is at risk:

  • •New security holes are discovered all the time, but are not fixed
  • •You become an easier target for hacker attacks
  • •New programs may stop working
  • •Online banking and other services may require a newer system

Can you upgrade to Windows 11?

Unfortunately, many otherwise fully functional PCs cannot be upgraded to Windows 11. Microsoft has introduced strict requirements, including a TPM 2.0 chip, which many older PCs — even quite powerful ones — do not have.

Typical PCs that cannot run Windows 11:

  • •Intel processors from before the 8th generation (2017)
  • •AMD processors from before the Ryzen 2000 series
  • •PCs without a TPM 2.0 chip
  • •Many otherwise excellent workhorses from 2015-2019

It is a shame to throw away a well-functioning PC just because it is missing one chip, even though it otherwise has plenty of power left.

Linux: your alternative to Windows

This is where Linux comes in. Linux is a free operating system that can run on almost any PC — including those that cannot run Windows 11.

With Linux, your PC can get decades more life, and you do not need to worry about security updates, as Linux distributions receive updates for many years to come.
